Panic is an ugly thing — a gathering of stress and worry, the anxious sighs. You spend your days contemplating your future, trying to decipher the potential paths. There seems to be so many choices; and none of them appeal. Success is elusive. Answers are lost. And you think something must be wrong with you: that’s the only explanation for such a massive failure. All others seem to understand their goals. They’ve chosen their courses, have selected the necessary credits. You haven’t, though. Your world is instead defined to that terrible limbo of an undeclared major. And the fear is beginning to build.
Don’t let it.
It is an all too easy thing for students to become overwhelmed by universities. The desire for higher education can become soured by uncertainty. There is much to decide and even more to consider; and this can lead many individuals to become frightened by their courses — and unable then to select the ones they need.
Choosing a major is a difficult task. This could never be denied. It demands your focus and your honesty: with all strengths and weaknesses examined, all needs understood. Such needs are not to dominate your every thought, however. They’re not to force you to make an impulsive — and unfortunate — decision. You must instead relax.
This, of course, is deemed impossible. You are too concerned with your career, with the classes you must take. A degree must be earned and you’re fretting over what that will entail. Try instead to simply breathe, however. Allow yourself to be patient. Don’t rush into a selection, thinking you must have your life mapped out as others do. Offer yourself time instead to consider your choices and find the one that most pleases. Don’t claim a major to avoid the accusations of your counselor (or your parents). Try instead to wait for the right one to reveal itself. It will happen.
And, when it does, you’ll be able to accept it — rather than panicking over every single course.
Don’t let stress affect your judgment. Let all studies be wise instead.
